Time to discover why wax is applied to Venetian plaster walls. Venetian plaster walls are bespoke pieces of art. There is a huge range of plaster types and effects that can create a truly beautiful look. One way of changing the look of a wall is to apply a wax coat finish to the wall. There are a range of different types of wax that can be used, which I will cover towards the end of this blog. Beforehand, it is important to understand why wax is applied to a wall or ceiling.
Wax is applied to a Venetian plaster wall for several reasons. Firstly, it helps protect the plaster from moisture and stains by creating a barrier on the surface. This makes the wall more resistant to water damage and easier to clean. Secondly, wax can enhance the appearance of the Venetian plaster. It adds a subtle sheen and depth to the wall, making it look more beautiful and luxurious. The wax also helps to bring out the colours and texture of the plaster, emphasising its unique characteristics.
Lastly, applying wax to a Venetian plaster wall helps in maintaining its longevity. Properly waxed walls generally require less maintenance and touch-ups over time. It helps to keep the plaster intact and prevents it from deteriorating, extending its lifespan. When applied correctly, wax can significantly contribute to the overall durability, beauty and preservation of a Venetian plaster wall.
There are different waxes that can be used on Venetian plaster walls. Many of the waxes are clear/ transparent and create a deeper shine.
Beeswax is a natural wax that gives a soft, stain finish.
Carnauba wax is natural and derived from Palm trees. It provides a hard and durable finish producing a warm glow to the wall.
Polyurethane wax is a wax blended of natural and synthetic ingredients, creating a strong protective barrier and can be polished to create a high sheen.
Microcrystalline wax is a man made synthetic wax and provides an excellent protection against moisture and small abrasions. It creates a glossy finish and is regularly used in conservation work.
Some waxes have a metallic undertone, and can create a gold, silver, bronze or other colour layer to the wall. Gold and bronze waxes are luxurious and drastically change the look of the wall.
